Australian farmers were pained to see that the quality Biodynamic food they put into the market was ending up in the general pool so a need arose for a centralised distribution system for all organic, Biodynamic produce.

History

In 1981, Alex, Trevor Hatch (BD beef and potato producer) and John Claringbould founded the Biodynamic Marketing Co Ltd. a not-for-profit company, to distribute Biodynamic produce to consumers.

Peter (Alex's son) and Judy Podolinsky started delivering to health food shops from a rented cool-room in Blackburn (Melbourne) and attended trade shows to raise awareness of the company.

As the business grew, they employed more people and moved their base to Powelltown. Trevor and Ginger Hatch (BD farmers from Athlone) worked with Peter to built the first shed. Trevor and Ginger supplied timber from their farm and built the trusses. Peter: 'It's things like that (Trevor and Ginger's contribution) that made the whole thing possible'.

Since building the original shed, it has been extended three times. In the earlier days, grains were first stored in outside silos but there came the need for a bigger shed to keep them out of the weather. More cool rooms and freezer rooms were then added as needed.

In 1989, Peter and Judy were still delivering the fresh Biodynamic produce from a warehouse in Melbourne, and the dry produce from Powelltown. An opportunity then arose for them to lease some space from a trader in the Melbourne Wholesale Market at Footscray, and they moved the fresh produce distribution there, later leasing their own space.

In 2015 Biodynamic Marketing Co moved their warehouse to a bigger and better location in Lilydale, enabling them to meet the higher demand for product with the every increasing Retail locations Australia wide. 2016 saw the Footscray Fresh produce market move location to Epping where Biodynamic Marketing continue to supply Fresh Biodynamic and Organic Produce Australia wide.

Biodynamics originated in the early 1920s from the work of Austrian scientist and philosopher, Dr Rudolf Steiner. Then, in Australia in 1953, Demeter certified biodynamics was pioneered by Alex Podolinsky with the establishment of the Biodynamic Agricultural Association of Australia.

The Biodynamic Research Institute in Powelltown, Victoria, was then formed in 1955 to certify farmers under the Demeter logo (trademarked in 1967).

The Australian Demeter symbol indicates that produce has been grown and processed according to the standards of the BioDynamic Research Institute. These standards include using environmentally friendly, ecologically safe, biological methods to activate and nurture the life of the soil, plants and animals within nature's organisation, without the use of artificial or synthetic chemicals, fertilisers, genetically modified organisms or the use of any unnecessary additives.
